Robert Norton Noyce (12 December 1927 – 3 June, 1990), nicknamed “the Mayor of Silicon Valley,” co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 and Intel in 1968. He’s additionally credited (together with Jack Kilby) with the invention of the built-in circuit or microchip. Whereas Kilby’s invention was six months earlier, neither man rejected the title of co-inventor.

[…]Noyce and Gordon E. Moore (a chemist and physicist) based Intel in 1968 after they left Fairchild Semiconductor. The relaxed tradition that Noyce delivered to Intel was a carryover from his type at Fairchild Semiconductor. He handled workers as household rewarding and inspiring group work. His follow-your-bliss administration type set the tone for a lot of Valley success tales.

Intel’s headquarters constructing, the Robert Noyce Constructing, in Santa Clara, California is called in his honor, as is the Robert N. Noyce ’49 Science Heart, which homes the science division of Grinnell School.

[…]In July 1959, he filed for U.S. Patent 2,981,877 “Semiconductor Gadget and Lead Construction,” a kind of built-in circuit. This impartial effort was recorded just a few months after the important thing findings of inventor Jack Kilby. For his co-invention of the built-in circuit and its world-transforming influence, three presidents of america honored him.

He would ultimately accumulate sixteen patents to his title.

Noyce was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1978 “for his contributions to the silicon built-in circuit, a cornerstone of recent electronics.” In 1979, he was awarded the Nationwide Medal of Science. In 1990, the Nationwide Academy of Engineering awarded him its Draper Prize.

To be trustworthy, I’d have by no means imagined that I’d obtain the Noyce award. It’s an honor of a lifetime. To have that recognition from my friends within the technical group is a humbling expertise. However I like what I do and with the ability to contribute to the semiconductor trade.
